Don't act cheap, or your date will see you as a cheap date.

That's not to say that you have to be very expensive, but be selective where you will and will not go. I wouldn't go to McDonalds on a first date, take me to a chinese restaurant or a Cafe if you don't have full pockets. Especially a Cafe, I love coffee, and I love the atmosphere. It allows us to talk and get to know each other. That's just me though. What do you think?
